Si no fuese por The Beatles, no sería un músico. Es tan sencillo como eso. Desde muy joven, me fascinaron sus canciones, y con el correr de los años, me he sumergido en la profundidad de su catálogo. Su Groove es su arrogancia. Su gracia y su belleza. Su oscuridad y su luz. The Beatles parecían capaces de todo. No conocían límites, y en esa libertad parecieron definir lo que hoy conocemos como Rock And Roll.

Hace poco, le mostré la gran película “Yellow Submarine” a mi hija Violet, de seis años de edad. Fue su introducción a The Beatles, y de inmediato mostró la misma fascinación que yo sentí cuando tenía su edad y descubrí a The Beatles por primera vez. Ella quería saber sus nombres, qué instrumentos tocaban, quién cantaba tal o cual canción, etc… me hizo tan increíblemente feliz (¡y orgulloso!). Con los días, ella ya sabía algunas frases y coros de cada canción en el disco. Pero fue una de esas canciones la que resaltó para ella…

“Hey Bulldog” no es uno de los grandes éxitos de The Beatles. Es lo que la mayoría podría considerar como un “corte profundo”. Pero es una canción rockera de los Beatles por quintaescencia. La línea de bajo, la batería marca registrada de Ringo, la guitarra agudamente distorsionada, y ese sonido que solo el fondo de la garganta de Lennon podía producir. Pisa con fuerza. Tiene onda. Te da vueltas la cabeza. Hace que tus caderas se sacudan. Cuando Lennon canta “if you’re lonely you can talk to me!” llega directo a tu corazón, como si finalmente hubieses encontrado algo en qué creer. Es tan crudo y real. Es rock and roll 100 % atemporal.

De una generación a la otra, The Beatles se mantendrá como la banda de rock más importante de todos los tiempos.
